Sawadee is a Thai greeting, like hello. Sawadee Sweets is a dessert cafe, serving Thai style desserts. The design is inspired from cafe designs in Thailand. These cafes have outrageous designs that transport customers to a different world. The ambiance is 90% of the experience. Keeping this in mind I designed Sawadee Sweets as a space that stood out to customers as an unique experience. The dark and moody atmosphere gives an intimate mood to the dessertery giving the space a very sultry vibe, a contrast to most other buildings we enter.
The design is based off of a traditional Thai ceramic style. Thai ceramic has painted flowers and buildings in bright blues, pinks, oranges, and greens. This made the color palette obvious. These custom booths are designed to mimic the architectural roof lines of Thai buildings. The mirrored ceilings give additional light and atmosphere, but are also a symbol of a spiritual or dimensional passageway in the Thai culture.
Flower Ceiling Rendering
The lotus flower is very symbolic in Thai culture. It is a symbol of spiritual awakening, which fits the mood of Sawadee Sweets perfectly. Lotuses and other florals are used throughout the space, the lighting on the architectural booths is inspired by a lotus. The wallpaper behind these booths depicts flowers and mushrooms on the jungle floor. The lights over the bar area are inspired by petals falling from the flower. The drop ceiling that is covered in artificial florals was designed to give these booths a separate unique design element. In addition it gives the space soft materials to absorb soundwaves and improve the acoustics. These flowers are complemented by the large wood panels on the adjacent wall that are very common in Thai decor.
